What is a silhouette?  The dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against lighter background in the dim light. 

Where does the term silhouette come from? The term silhouette came from france. Etienne de Silhouette was a french controller general of finances under Louis XV

How would you describe the work of modern day artist Kara Walker and her use of silhouette's? Kara Walker is known for her cut paper silhouettes. She uses different techniques, she cuts things out and puts them in front of light to make shapes into something totally different.
